A little sidetracked

There are so many jobs out there!

By looking at everything that has been advertised, it has given me an idea of what I want to do for placement. I have narrowed it down anyway.

Like I said in my last post, industries don’t want interns but I’m convinced they need someone like me.

The search begins

I would’t have the slightest clue how to apply for internships.

I don’t even know what kind of internship I want to do. Do I do print, film, online? And they consist of other categories, magazines, newspapers, non-for profit websites.

It’s all too confusing.

I started with good old google again, typing in key words such as journalism internships, journalism jobs, journalism work experience, media internships.

Firstly I looked for somewhere in Melbourne, although positions that were advertised were scarce.

I branched out and looked for other places all over Australia, at least if I can get something… ANYTHING, I can catch a plane or if it were online I could just work from Melbourne.

When I spoke to one of my lecturers at Latrobe, he said that a lot of industries don’t want interns because they are an effort.

I thought I would look anyway at what was advertised, that way I can see whats out there and check out what they want from interns.

I kept scrolling though ‘job advertisements’, and that got me thinking… maybe I should do another resume?

Journalism job Resume

How to write a… journalism resume?

Finally I have completed my resume. I looked through so many websites of how to write the best resumes especially for journalism students.

With the competition, ‘make yours stand out from the rest’… blah blah blah.

I just typed into the infamous Google, ‘How to write a journalism resume’.

Some of the websites that came up were actually quite useful. I though I might just write down my experience and education…all the basics. I have never had to write a resume for journalism, it has always been for part-time jobs while doing university.

I wrote the resume how i knew how, and used the websites I found to categorise my experience into sections.

This really helped to improve it. Most of the websites I found were ‘Things that doom a journalism students resume‘, and ‘Writing a successful resume‘.

They also advised me to include sections like specialised skills, which was helpful because I know how to use a lot of industry based softwares. I learnt things like final cut pro, Audacity, word press and photoshop from using it in my degree.

It’s weird how much you actually know and the experience you have gained just in couple of years, just by taking every opportunity offered to you.

Anyway, you can take a look at my updated version.

Internship Resume

An overview

Monday 10 March:

Took a look at my old resume that I completed in my first year of my degree.

‘Wow’ I thought, it has really changed in the past couple of years, plus I had the intention of updating it many times…

So today I went through all of my experience I didn’t even know I had and wrote it down on my resume.

Throughout my three years I have taken a paid internship as an investigative reporter for a branding research and development company.

Another internship I have taken was not really an internship but more volunteer work, at SYN FM radio. Although it was unpaid volunteer work I learnt a great deal from them. I reported, produced and broadcast current affairs to an estimated 80,000 listeners a week.

Another place where I have learnt so many of the skills I have today was working as a politics and society reporter for an online publication. This place was also un-paid and through my university, but never the less very valuable. I covered major events such as the 2013 federal election and got to personally interview politicians such as Bob Katter and Dennis Jensen. This is where I learnt my HTML and Word press skills that has proven to be a very valuable asset when applying for internships.

I have to go through all of the ‘technical’ documents supplied by the University such as personal accident insurance and start applying for internships… Lets see how we go.
